in 1998 Alia began working for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) as a health coordinator. She quickly climbed the ranks, and eventually became the mission head for a variety of MSF initiatives in Africa as well as Asia. In her time at MSF, Alia oversaw several emergency interventions, such as those responding to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa and the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh.
